Fitting air conditioning in Chiswick

Air conditioning installation in Chiswick starts with a survey of your rooms and your building. We check the unit size, the pipe route and where the outdoor unit can go, then you get a written quote. How an installation works.

A single split cools one room, and a multi-split runs several rooms from one outdoor unit. Fewer outdoor units means less to place, which helps on a terrace or in a flat. Most split units heat as well as cool, so one system can do both jobs.

A few things make the survey quicker:

  • a list of the rooms you want cooled
  • your lease, if you live in a flat
  • the name of your conservation area, if you’re in one

The road along Chiswick Mall floods at times, and the riverside path at Strand-on-the-Green floods at spring tides. If you live there, we’ll ask when we book, so a visit doesn’t clash with a high tide.

Most units heat as well as cool. How air con can heat your home.

Servicing and repairs

Servicing and repairs cover all of Chiswick, whoever fitted your system. A service keeps it clean and running well, and a repair visit finds out why it has stopped cooling or shown a fault. What a service covers and how a repair visit works.

A unit that has stopped cooling is worth a quick check before you book:

  1. Set the mode to Cool, and the temperature below the room’s.
  2. Check the remote’s batteries and any timer.
  3. Clear anything from around the outdoor unit.

Ice that comes back, water dripping indoors or an error code all need an engineer. Why air con stops cooling.

More homes are fitting air con

More UK homes are fitting air conditioning, and homes with built-in units have about doubled in three years. The best time for a survey is before the first hot spell, when fitters have more room in the diary.

Shops, offices and restaurants in Chiswick

Businesses in Chiswick should settle where units go early, because Hounslow’s High Road appraisal picks out how air con is placed. Census figures show about 310 households over a shop, or in an office or hotel building, across five neighbourhoods. Chiswick North East has the most, at 135, then Chiswick Park, at 103.

The High Road’s conservation area takes in three main shopping streets:

  • Chiswick High Road, one of the borough’s four town centres
  • Devonshire Road
  • Turnham Green Terrace

One W4 business won approval in September 2026 with one rear unit, in place of the three it first planned. That application also covered other works.

In Bedford Park, the back of the house counts too

Bedford Park in Chiswick needs more care over an outdoor unit, because the back of a house counts too. Hounslow Council’s appraisal says the backs and sides of these properties “were designed to be seen”.

A rear wall is the usual hiding place, so that changes the survey. We’ll look at the view from gardens and side streets, as well as from the road.

Three more things shape the job:

  • Which council: the west side of Woodstock Road and everything west of it, including The Avenue, is in Ealing. Ealing’s tests apply there, and Hounslow’s apply to the east.
  • Listing: the surviving original buildings are listed, most at Grade II, so expect listed building consent as well as planning permission.
  • Article 4: just 2 of Hounslow’s 29 conservation areas have these directions, and Bedford Park is one. Its direction covers unlisted buildings, down to small details at the front.

A yes is possible here. Inside Hounslow’s part of Bedford Park, the council approved 5 of 6 applications mainly for air con in the five years to October 2026.

It also granted 6 listed building consents there that included air con. Each put the unit at the rear or in a garden, or added an acoustic enclosure or shelter.

The appraisal says the tight layout leaves little room for change beyond repair and small upgrades. So in a listed house, a fixed outdoor unit may not suit. Options without an outdoor unit, and the best spots for one.

Planning for air con in Hounslow

Hounslow Council approves most air con in W4: 25 of 31 applications over the five years to October 2026. Those figures leave out the W4 streets that Ealing Council decides.

The application descriptions show what helps:

  • Asking first: 18 of the 20 applications made before fitting were approved.
  • Moving the unit: two homes won approval with the units in a new spot. One moved to a side boundary wall. The other went to the far corner of the garden, in a louvred acoustic enclosure.

We couldn’t read the council’s decision letters, so treat these as patterns and not as its reasons.

Allow about 9 weeks for a decision. The median was 62 days, against an 8-week target.

These are past results, not a promise for your home. They count people who applied, and many units never need an application.

We check the planning route at the survey. If you need to apply or ask a freeholder, we supply the drawings and the unit’s data.

Flats outnumber houses in Chiswick

Flats outnumber houses in Chiswick, at 59% of households against 41%. Those shares cover the five census neighbourhoods named Chiswick, one of which is in Ealing borough.

That puts most households on the flat route, not the house route. A house can use heat pump rights, within limits. A flat usually needs planning permission and the freeholder’s yes. What to settle with a freeholder.

Each part of W4 raises its own question:

  • Bedford Park and Turnham Green: in Chiswick North West and North East, about 1 in 4 homes are converted flats, the highest shares here. Hounslow’s appraisal says some flats are being turned back into single houses. That’s a good moment to plan pipe runs.
  • Gunnersbury and the High Road: the Chiswick Park neighbourhood has 45% of homes in purpose-built flats, and 31% in houses. Expect the block’s freeholder to decide first.
  • Grove Park: Hounslow’s appraisal calls it Chiswick’s first large Victorian estate, built for large mansions. It’s a conservation area, so the heat pump rights rule out any wall facing a road.
  • Old Chiswick and Strand-on-the-Green: the Old Chiswick appraisal picks out how renewable energy equipment is placed, and says views from the river count. Close to the river wall, the Environment Agency may need to give a permit too.

Where Chiswick needs cooling most

Chiswick South West scores highest for heat of Hounslow’s four Chiswick neighbourhoods, on the GLA’s climate risk map. The area takes in Strand-on-the-Green and Grove Park. Its tree cover is about 17%, against 23% in Chiswick North East, which scores lowest.

All four score below most of the borough. The map weighs age and income as well as shade, so a lower score isn’t a promise of a cool flat.

Top floors of converted houses are the rooms we look at first, because heat collects under the roof. Renters need their landlord’s agreement before any fitting. Options if you rent.

Noise checks after fitting in Chiswick

A noise test after fitting is a condition of some Hounslow Council permissions in Chiswick, so we build it into the plan. The wording the council used on a large W4 office scheme in November 2025 has three parts:

  1. The unit’s noise must stay a set margin below the noise already there.
  2. The unit must sit on anti-vibration mounts.
  3. Within 28 days of finishing, a measured noise assessment goes to the council for approval.

Any fixes go in straight away, and the test is repeated until it passes.

Homes get these conditions too. W4’s records show 6 noise reports sent in after permission since 2024, on homes and businesses. The council has accepted all 5 it has decided.

Background noise matters, because the test measures the unit against what’s already there. Hounslow’s appraisals say aircraft and traffic dominate within 50 metres of the A4, with bird song and town sounds beyond. So a quiet garden gives a unit less to hide behind.

Read your permission’s conditions before the job starts, so the test is part of the plan. How loud air con is.
