Air conditioning in Hampstead
Fitting, servicing and repairs, from the Heath to West Hampstead.
Fitting air conditioning in Hampstead
Air conditioning installation in Hampstead starts with a survey of your rooms and your building. We check the unit size, the pipe route and where the outdoor unit can go, then you get a written quote. How an installation works.
A single split cools one room, and a multi-split runs several rooms from one outdoor unit. Fewer outdoor units means less to place, which helps on a terrace or in a flat. Most split units heat as well as cool, so one system can do both jobs.
A few things make the survey quicker:
- a list of the rooms you want cooled
- your lease, if you live in a flat
- the name of your conservation area, if you’re in one
Controlled parking zones cover large areas of Camden, including the CA-H zone in Hampstead. A trade permit can use resident bays there, and double yellow lines up to 8pm. We’ll ask about your street when we book.

Servicing and repairs
Servicing and repairs cover all of Hampstead, whoever fitted your system. A service keeps it clean and running well, and a repair visit finds out why it has stopped cooling or shown a fault. What a service covers and how a repair visit works.
A unit that has stopped cooling is worth a quick check before you book:
- Set the mode to Cool, and the temperature below the room’s.
- Check the remote’s batteries and any timer.
- Clear anything from around the outdoor unit.
Ice that comes back, water dripping indoors or an error code all need an engineer. Why air con stops cooling.
Air con makes we fit in Hampstead
Air con makes we fit in Hampstead include the nine below, and we’ll suggest the one that suits your rooms. We service and repair these makes too, whoever fitted them. The make and model are on a label on the indoor unit, so have them ready when we call.

More homes are fitting air con
More UK homes are fitting air conditioning, and homes with built-in units have about doubled in three years. The best time for a survey is before the first hot spell, when fitters have more room in the diary.

Shops, offices and restaurants in Hampstead
Shops and restaurants around Hampstead should expect to show their equipment in detail. The Hampstead and Belsize conservation statements ask for full details of mechanical plant on any change to a restaurant, pub or takeaway.
The main shopping streets differ:
- Hampstead High Street and Heath Street, inside the conservation area
- West End Lane in West Hampstead
- Finchley Road around Swiss Cottage
- Kilburn High Road, where the far side falls under Brent
The census counted about 680 households over a shop, or in an office or hotel building, across this page’s 11 neighbourhoods. Hampstead Town and West Hampstead have the most. So a shop’s unit can sit close to someone’s home.
Big jobs can pass here. An NW6 shop won approval in 2026 for eight roof condensers and new louvred panels.

Hampstead’s neighbourhood plan backs heat pumps
Hampstead’s neighbourhood plan supports heat pumps, as long as passive cooling comes first and trees are left alone. Camden adopted the plan on 21 July 2025, and it runs to 2040. It carries the same legal weight as the Local Plan.
Policy DH3 shapes a cooling job in four ways:
- Passive first: new work should put window design, outside shading and natural ventilation ahead of machines.
- Heat pumps: the plan’s notes say heat pumps “will be supported”, within a green heating and cooling hierarchy.
- Trees: cutting down a tree or its canopy to make way for renewable energy wouldn’t be supported.
- Listed homes: low-carbon changes are welcome where they protect neighbours and historic fabric.
That helps a system that heats as well as cools. The plan never mentions air conditioning by name, and Camden’s own test still applies. How Camden’s need test works.
Close to the Heath, take extra care. The plan says work on its fringes should keep any impact on the Heath to a minimum.
The plan covers Hampstead Town ward, a large part of Frognal ward and a small part of Gospel Oak ward. It leaves out Church Row and Perrin’s Walk. Redington Frognal, West Hampstead and Kilburn have their own plans, and none mentions air con.
The conservation statements add an older rule. Hampstead’s, from 2001, says all outside ventilation ducts and air handling equipment need planning permission. Camden looks most closely at visually sensitive spots and at units near homes. Belsize’s statement says the same.
Thirteen of Camden’s conservation areas fall in NW3 and NW6:
- NW3: Hampstead, Redington Frognal, Fitzjohns Netherhall, Belsize, Parkhill, Mansfield, South Hill Park, Eton and Elsworthy
- NW6: South Hampstead, West End Green, Priory Road and St John’s Wood
If the one open spot means cutting back a tree, a fixed outdoor unit isn’t the right fix here. Options with no outdoor box.

Planning for air con in Camden
Camden Council approves most air con in Hampstead: 49 of 55 decided applications in NW3 and NW6 over the five years to October 2026.
Proof of need is what decides it here, so the cooling hierarchy comes first and dynamic thermal modelling helps. Applying before fitting helps too, with 44 of the 47 such applications approved.
A September 2026 approval shows what can pass. An NW3 house in a conservation area asked for one small unit in a louvred enclosure, at the bottom of the garden. Its modelling showed the home would still overheat after passive measures. The council made shading, blinds, fans and ventilation details a condition, fitted before first use.
Allow about 17 weeks for a decision. The median was 118 days, against an 8-week target.
These are past results, not a promise for your home. They count people who applied, and many units never need an application.
We check the planning route at the survey. If you need to apply or ask a freeholder, we supply the drawings and the unit’s data.

Big houses turned into flats
Big houses turned into flats hold 35% of households in NW3 and NW6, against 11% across London. Another 48% live in purpose-built flats, and 14% in houses.
Those shares sum 11 census neighbourhoods. They run from Hampstead Town, Frognal, Fitzjohns and Belsize Park to Adelaide Road, Mansfield Road and Park Hill Road. West Hampstead, South Hampstead, Kilburn Grange, Kilburn East and Swiss Cottage complete the list.
So most jobs here start with a freeholder, then planning. What to agree before you start.
Each part of the area asks something different:
- South Hampstead and Belsize Park: over half of households are in converted houses, at 55% and 53%. Belsize is known for large Victorian villas. Agree the unit’s spot with the other flats early, because gardens and walls are often shared.
- Hampstead village: cottages, grand 18th-century houses, Victorian tenements and villas sit side by side. Hampstead Town has the most houses on this page, at 34%. Many homes are listed, so check that before you pick a system.
- Swiss Cottage and Kilburn East: 69% and 74% of households are in purpose-built flats. The block’s landlord comes first, and its rules decide whether a wall or roof unit can go ahead.

Summer heat in Hampstead
Summer heat in Hampstead depends on how close you are to the Heath’s trees. The Greater London Authority’s climate data shows tree cover falling as you head south and west:
- Hampstead Town: about 51%
- Frognal: about 43%
- Swiss Cottage: about 24%
- Kilburn Grange and Kilburn East: about 21% to 22%
- West Hampstead: about 17%
West Hampstead and Kilburn get the least natural shade, so the need is likely to be greatest there. Hampstead Town and Frognal have more older residents, at about 8% to 9% over 75, and the data counts age as a risk. So need isn’t just a matter of trees.
At the survey we look at which rooms take the afternoon sun, and what the trees already shade. If you rent, your landlord’s yes comes first. What the next ten years could bring.

Hampstead questions
Does Hampstead’s neighbourhood plan allow air conditioning?
Hampstead’s neighbourhood plan doesn’t mention air conditioning by name. It supports heat pumps, puts passive cooling first and protects trees, so a system that heats as well fits it better. What the plan says.
Do I need thermal modelling for one unit in Hampstead?
One unit in Hampstead can need thermal modelling, because Camden wants the need shown whatever the size. A small NW3 garden unit won approval in 2026 with modelling behind it. What to show the council.
Can I fit an outdoor unit in a shared Belsize Park garden?
An outdoor unit in a shared Belsize Park garden needs the freeholder’s yes and usually planning permission. Belsize is a conservation area, and flats don’t get the national rights that houses have. The best spots compared.
Does Brent or Camden decide in Kilburn?
Brent and Camden each decide in Kilburn, because the boundary runs down Kilburn High Road. Your council tax bill shows which one covers your home. Our Wembley page covers Brent.
Do you cover West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage?
West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage are both on our list, in NW6 and NW3. So are Belsize Park, Frognal and Kilburn. All our Hampstead postcodes.
