Fitting air conditioning in Twickenham
Air conditioning installation in Twickenham starts with a survey of your rooms and your building. We check the unit size, the pipe route and where the outdoor unit can go, then you get a written quote. How an installation works.
A single split cools one room, and a multi-split runs several rooms from one outdoor unit. Fewer outdoor units means less to place, which helps on a terrace or in a flat. Most split units heat as well as cool, so one system can do both jobs.
A few things make the survey quicker:
- a list of the rooms you want cooled
- your lease, if you live in a flat
- the name of your conservation area, if you’re in one
On big event days at Twickenham Stadium, the event parking zone runs from 11am to 11pm across many nearby roads. We’ll check event dates when we book, so a visit doesn’t land on one.

Servicing and repairs
Servicing and repairs cover all of Twickenham, whoever fitted your system. A service keeps it clean and running well, and a repair visit finds out why it has stopped cooling or shown a fault. What a service covers and how a repair visit works.
A unit that has stopped cooling is worth a quick check before you book:
- Set the mode to Cool, and the temperature below the room’s.
- Check the remote’s batteries and any timer.
- Clear anything from around the outdoor unit.
Ice that comes back, water dripping indoors or an error code all need an engineer. Why air con stops cooling.

More homes are fitting air con
More UK homes are fitting air conditioning, and homes with built-in units have about doubled in three years. The best time for a survey is before the first hot spell, when fitters have more room in the diary.

Shops, offices and restaurants in Twickenham
Shops and restaurants in Twickenham should agree where units go before fitting them. Richmond Council says heat pump rights don’t apply to commercial premises, so expect to apply.
About 850 households live over a shop, or in an office or hotel building, across 14 census neighbourhoods. Twickenham Town has the most, at 223, then Teddington Central, at 111. So noise counts as much as looks.
You’ll meet this in the main shopping streets:
- Twickenham town centre, a district centre
- Broad Street and Teddington High Street
- Whitton High Street, a 1930s high street
- Hampton Hill High Street
- St Margarets Road and Crown Road
One TW1 shop won approval in February 2026, with brick walls around the units. In St Margarets, the council’s older Crown Road study looks at how air conditioning units affect the design of its buildings.

How the Thames changes a job in Twickenham
The Thames changes a job in Twickenham in three ways, depending on how close your home is to the water:
- Distance from the water: the Environment Agency says work within 16 metres of the tidal Thames may need a flood risk activity permit. Above Teddington Lock, where the tide ends, that falls to 8 metres.
- Flood zones: in Flood Zone 2 or 3, a householder application must include Richmond Council’s flood form or a flood risk assessment.
- Height: an outdoor unit and its electrics need to sit above likely flood level.
Some work is excluded or exempt from the permit, so we’d check before fixing anything that close to the river. The Local Plan uses the same distances for new buildings, and applies the 8 metres to other rivers, such as the Crane. Check your flood risk.
Eel Pie Island adds another step, because no vehicles reach it. The council’s guidance says the island has a footbridge and no road. Most goods are carried over the bridge, and heavier ones go by punt. We’ll ask how goods reach your plot when we book, because that shapes which unit is practical.
If every spot sits below likely flood level, a fixed outdoor unit probably isn’t right for that home. Options with no outdoor box.

Planning for air con in Richmond
Richmond Council approves most air con in Twickenham: 33 of 42 applications in TW1, TW2, TW11 and TW12 over the five years to October 2026.
The application descriptions show what has worked:
- Lower down: units at ground level on a TW12 home, approved in 2024.
- Boxed in: a TW1 unit on a side wall, approved with an acoustic enclosure.
Those come from the descriptions, not the council’s reasons, because we couldn’t open its decision letters.
Allow about 13 weeks for a decision here. The median was 91 days, against an 8-week target.
These are past results, not a promise for your home. They count people who applied, and many units never need an application.
We check the planning route at the survey. If you need to apply or ask a freeholder, we supply the drawings and the unit’s data.

Homes from St Margarets to Hampton
Houses lead in this part of the borough, at 63% of households against 37% in flats. Those shares cover 14 census neighbourhoods, from St Margarets and Whitton to Hampton.
That means many homes here can look at the heat pump rights first. A flat or converted house usually can’t, and needs planning permission and the freeholder’s yes. What to settle in a flat.
The mix changes across the area:
- Whitton and Heathfield: large estates of inter-war semis and terraces, with 56% of Heathfield’s homes semi-detached. A semi gets one heat pump under the rights, so one outdoor unit may have to serve several rooms.
- Twickenham Marble Hill: 22% of homes are flats in converted houses, the highest share here. East Twickenham has many Victorian and Edwardian villas, so a freeholder will often have a say.
- Hampton Wick and Teddington East: 43% of homes are in purpose-built flats, the highest share here. A block’s own rules on outside walls usually come before any planning question.
- Hampton Village: 18% of homes are detached, the highest share here. The High Street and Church Street hold many listed buildings, and those need listed building consent.

Which parts of Twickenham need cooling most?
The Whitton side of Twickenham shows the most need for cooling, on the GLA’s climate risk map. Whitton scores highest of our 14 neighbourhoods, then Nursery Lands and Hampton North, then Heathfield.
Trees are part of the reason. Whitton’s tree cover is about 12%, against 24% in Hampton Hill and Strawberry Hill. Hampton Village and Hampton Wick score lowest.
Temperature isn’t the difference. Average summer air temperature barely changes across these neighbourhoods, so the score mostly reflects who lives here and how much shade they get.
Rooms under the roof of a 1930s semi tend to hold heat into the night, so the survey starts there. If you rent, your landlord has to agree first. Options if you rent.

Twickenham questions
Does living by the Thames change an air con job in Twickenham?
Living by the Thames in Twickenham can add a flood form to a planning application, and a permit close to the water. The form applies in Flood Zones 2 and 3. Check your flood risk.
Can you fit air con on Eel Pie Island?
Eel Pie Island is in TW1, so we cover it, but the job needs more planning. The island has no road, so an outdoor unit crosses the footbridge or goes by punt. What changes by the river.
What if my first choice of spot doesn’t work?
A different spot or an acoustic enclosure can work in Twickenham. Later plans have often won approval on the same site. The best spots compared.
Which council decides for my street in TW1 or TW2?
